Local Smoke & CO Detectors Experts
Properly installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are the single most effective life-safety measure in any Sarasota home. Majors Electrical installs, replaces, and interconnects hardwired smoke and CO detectors per NFPA 72 and the Florida Building Code, ensuring every bedroom, hallway, and living level in your home has the protection required by law—and the reliability your family depends on.
Safety Notice
Test your smoke and CO detectors monthly by pressing the test button. If a detector chirps intermittently, replace the battery immediately. If it is older than 10 years, replace the entire unit—sensors degrade even if the alarm still sounds during testing.

Florida Smoke & CO Detector Requirements
The Florida Building Code adopts NFPA 72 for smoke alarm placement: detectors are required inside every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the dwelling including the basement. For new construction and major remodels, these detectors must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so that when one alarm sounds, all alarms in the home activate simultaneously. Carbon monoxide detectors are required when the home has fuel-burning appliances, attached garages, or gas service.
- Hardwired detectors with 10-year sealed lithium battery backup
- Interconnection so all alarms sound together per NFPA 72 29.5.2.1
- Smoke alarms inside every bedroom and outside each sleeping area
- CO detectors near fuel-burning appliances and attached garages
- Combination smoke/CO units to simplify installation and coverage
When to Replace Your Detectors
Smoke detectors have a 10-year lifespan regardless of whether they still chirp during testing—the ionization or photoelectric sensor degrades over time and becomes less responsive. CO detectors have a 5- to 7-year lifespan. If your Sarasota home still has detectors from the original construction and was built before 2014, those units are past their replacement date. Majors Electrical replaces old detectors with current dual-sensor (photoelectric + ionization) models that provide the best detection across both smoldering and fast-flaming fires.
- Smoke alarms: replace every 10 years per NFPA 72
- CO alarms: replace every 5–7 years per manufacturer guidelines
- Dual-sensor smoke detectors for smoldering and fast-fire detection
- Date-of-manufacture check during every service visit
Hardwired vs. Battery-Only Detectors
Battery-only detectors are permitted in existing homes where no remodel triggers a code upgrade, but hardwired detectors with battery backup are far more reliable. Hardwired units draw constant power from a dedicated circuit and only rely on the battery during outages, eliminating the risk of a dead-battery failure. Majors Electrical can retrofit hardwired, interconnected detectors into existing homes by running wiring through attic space, often without opening walls.
- Hardwired detectors with battery backup for maximum reliability
- Attic-access retrofit wiring to avoid opening finished walls
- Wireless interconnect options for homes where wiring is impractical
- Dedicated circuit for detector power per best practice
